We know it is critical to remind citizens about the risk of severe weather to make sure people are aware of the various threats and can ensure their friends and family are prepared to be safe.”
The outdoor warning sirens will be tested as always on the first Wednesday of the Month (March 2) at 11 AM. However, because it is Severe Weather Awareness Week, an additional test of the outdoor warning siren system in Johnson County (and throughout the State of Kansas) will be conducted on Tuesday, March 8, 2010 at 1:30 pm with a backup date of Thursday, March 10th at the same time. This drill will also take place over the NOAA weather/all-hazard radios throughout the Metropolitan area to encourage families and businesses to practice their preparedness plans.
Severe Weather Awareness Week activities this year will include the Severe Weather Awareness Seminar Series which is designed for certain community groups or businesses with unique vulnerability to become more aware of the acute issues that face their organization during severe weather.
Johnson County Emergency Management & Homeland Security will also continue to promote individual and family preparedness to local citizens through educational messages in various media outlets and social media forms. This includes public channels on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Specific educational campaigns like “Preparedness Piggy” and various educational pieces are included. The public is encouraged to “friend” or “follow” these sites to learn more about what the County is doing to be prepared for all emergencies that might impact the County.
